Prayers . . . on marriage and divorce

A Prayer for the Innocent Partners of Divorce

O God of justice and mercy, I boldly approach you today on behalf of the innocent partners of divorce.  I know you identify with them, because you were also an innocent victim of divorce.  Jeremiah says the many adulteries of your wife, Israel, left you no choice but to put her away.  It broke your hear, God.  Your agony echoes through the pages of the Old Testament.  That's why you understand the anguish of these victims.

Be with these people when they feel tossed away like a used up plastic cup -- when they feel worthless.  Help them understand how precious they are to you.  Supply energy when they're too tired to finish the day's chores.  Let them rest in your hand.   Lead them to ask for forgiveness for past mistakes, then assure them you forgive them. Take away any guilt they feel over a divorce they didn't choose.

Be their perfect spouse. Give them wisdom as they prayerfully parent.  Provide for them when money runs low.  Call them to spend time with you when loneliness hollows out their hearts.  Show them clearly that they an be successful -- even happy -- if they depend on you.  Fill them with your joy.  In Jesus' name,

Amen

"I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries."
