A PRAYER FOR A REBELLIOUS CHILD

Mighty God, once again we fall to our knees, both in reverence and weariness.  Hear our cry, O Lord.  The behavior of this self-focused, rebel child baffles me.  I try to understand; I think I listen -- yet I am accused of not caring and trying to control!  Father, I know how I raised this child and this thing puzzles me.  His early years were so joy filled.  He seemed to take by faith the truths he heard from me.  His father and I guided him the best we could.  Then parenting started to get harder as he began to question -- everything!

 Lord, turn his heart to you.  I want to spare him the grief of walking without you.  Why won't he embrace you and walk in the peace you provide?  The laughter he used to draw from his father and me has changed into copious tear spilling.  I know he must find his own way, and I plead for you to draw him back to you.  As he searches for fulfillment, Lord, may your sweet Holy Spirit be a constant companion and friend.  I look to that day when our family will celebrate and give thanks together for your saving power, your hand of blessing, and your patience.

Meanwhile, I lay this defiant child on the altar as a surrendered offering.  Our parenting continues, but I give you the authorization do whatever it takes to bring this young one back into line.  His father and I wait expectantly as you work it out and we, with you, walk it out in Jesus' name.

Amen

For this son of mine was dead and is alive again;

he was lost and is found.
